Fire Detection Systems are designed to discover fires early in their development when time will still be available for the safe evacuation of occupants. Early detection also plays a significant role in protecting the safety of emergency response personnel. Property loss can be reduced and downtime for the operation minimized through early detection because control efforts are started while the fire is still small. Most alarm systems provide information to emergency responders on the location of the fire, speeding the process of fire control.
Fire hydrant installation consists of a system of pipe work connected directly to the water supply main to provide water to each and every hydrant outlet and is intended to provide water for the firemen to fight a fire. The water is discharged into the fire engine form which it is then pumped and sprayed over fire. Where the water supply is not reliable or inadequate, hydrant pumps should be provided to pressurize the fire mains. The Fire Hydrant Line is always kept pressurized with water. In the event of any minor pressure drop in the system, the pressure reaches the preset pressure setting for Jockey pump, the Jockey pump will start automatically to compensate the pressure differential.
Fire extinguishers are available in different types, with each one having specific fire classes that they are suitable for use on. Fire extinguishers should have a red body and an agent specific colour band, covering between 5-10% of the surface, relating to the extinguisher contents. When choosing which fire extinguisher you need within your premises, a fire risk assessment will help you to identify the fire risks and exactly which extinguisher would be needed should a fire happen.
Other types of extinguisher depending upon premises are:
– Dry powder extinguishers: for gas risk areas, e.g. in boiler rooms
– Wet chemical extinguishers: for use in restaurants and kitchens where the source and fuel of fire can come from cooking oils and fats.
A fire pump is a part of a fire sprinkler, internal and external Hydrant system’s water supply and can be powered by electric, diesel pump. The pump intake is connected to the independent fire sump. The pump provides water flow at a higher pressure to the sprinkler system, risers and hose standpipes.
A fire pump is tested and listed for its use specifically for fire service by a third-party testing and listing agency, such as UL or FM Global. The main code that governs fire pump installations is the National Fire Protection Association’s NFPA 20 Standard for the Installation of Stationary Fire Pumps for Fire Protection
A fire sprinkler system is an active fire protection measure, consisting of a water supply system, providing adequate pressure and flow rate to a water distribution piping system, onto which fire sprinklers are connected.
It is used in factories, large commercial buildings, warehouses, High Rise Building and Residential and Car Parking area. In buildings completely protected by fire sprinkler systems, Most of fires can be controlled by fire sprinklers alone.
FM200(HFC 227ea) is known chemically as Heptafluoropropane.FM200 is a colourless gas which is liquified under pressure for storage. Like Halon 1301 it has a low toxicity level and is superpressurised with Nitrogen to 24.8bar(360psi). It rapidly extinguishes most commonly found fires through a combination of chemical and physical mechanisms.FM200 contains no bromine or chlorine and therefore has zero Ozone Depleting Potential(ODP). The atmospheric lifetime of FM200 is between 31 and 42 years which along with its zero ODP presents a long-term solution to fire protection requirements.
FM200 has been found to be less toxic than Halon 1301, which makes it safe for use in the fully automatic mode in occupied areas.
